Jessica Hurtubise

l'Escale HIgh School - 2011 Serge Payer Foundation Recipient

Jessica Hurtubise was a recipient of the Serge Payer Foundation scholarship in 2011. The scholarship contributed to her dream to study Marine Biology and Oceanography, which she did through B.Sc Honours Co-op at Dalhousie University in Halifax, NS. Through this degree, Jess gained invaluable experience through wonderful projects such as: protection of leatherback sea turtles off Nova Scotia, tagging and tracking blue sharks through the north Atlantic, launching of a Canada Integrated Ocean Observing System, and reconciliation policy with Fisheries and Oceans Canada.

Now, she lives with her fiancé in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, working for the indigenous organization North Slave Métis Alliance where she acts as representative and liaison for engagements between regional and federal governments and Métis members on issues such as wildlife conservation, environmental protection, and indigenous stewardship. Just as in high school, Jess continues to be an avid sportsperson and lover of the outdoors, keenly playing volleyball, softball, soccer, and ultimate frisbee, and spending lots of her time cross-country skiing, canoeing, camping, biking, and paddle boarding. She is an active board member and volunteer for the Yellowknife Ultimate Club.
